Types of website and classification by purpose

A website is a collection of interlinked web pages with a common domain name. The website can be made by any individual, group, or company. All the websites together constitute the world wide web. The website can be of several types, like an e-commerce website, social media website, or a blog website, and every website has a different role, but one thing is common that every website has several linked web pages.

You can create a random website where on the first page you can add a picture of your favorite dish and link that page to another web page where you can add or write about yourself. Initially, the structure of a web page was made using  HTML, a hypertext markup language. The domain name categorizes the types of websites: commercial websites used .com extension and non-profit organization used .org extension.

Types of Website

Personal website

Any non-profit site where the owner puts any data on topics of interest to him. Most often, personal pages are thematic resources, for example, a site for growing indoor plants, a site for fishing, etc.

In the beginning, there were many such websites, but now they are gradually being displaced by blogs and personal pages in social networks. A distinctive feature of the personal home page, apart from the specific theme, is the clearly defined structure with constant content on the home page, site map, etc.

Blog website

At first glance, a blog is little different from a personal site, but that’s only at first glance. A blog is a diary that is kept as a diary – practically every day. And since it is a diary, it is written there on any topics that interest the author. The main blog page is constantly changing, as it is a list of excerpts from recent notes, sorted by date in reverse order (most recent on top). A blog is primarily communication with readers, there is always an opportunity to leave comments, subscribe to a newsletter, or leave an evaluation of the author for the post.

Information portal

This category of web sites can include all sites that are designed to consolidate information on a specific topic. They differ from personal pages in that their authors can be many, and attention to the quality of materials, publishing style and other aspects of the content is much higher. Information portals most often do not belong to private individuals, but to separate organizations. An example of this type of resource is Wikipedia or MSDN – a resource (technical on-line library) of the Microsoft company for the software technologies and programming languages created by this company.

Media portal

A site containing news, event announcements, forecasts, interviews and other types of media-specific material. The peculiarity of these resources is that they are constantly updated, and search engines pay special attention to them, trying to index their new pages. Media portals can be on any topic, or only about certain areas of life, such as sports events.

Corporate website (Company site)

Representation of a commercial organization on the Internet. Part of the corporate site can be an information portal dedicated to products or services provided by the company. If the company is large, the corporate website may include its own media portal. Also, such sites should have a brief description of the company, its mission and values, as well as a list of services, customer reviews, contacts, etc.

Forum

A site that is created for its visitors to discuss various topics. Quite often the forum is part of other resources. For example, for a corporate portal it is an excellent means of organizing user feedback, and for an informational one it is a source of publication reviews.

Landing page

The resource is created to promote a new product or service within a specific campaign. The life cycle of these sites is often limited by time and advertising campaign. Promo site, this is a kind of advertising poster on the Internet.

Online store – E-commerce website

Here the comments are superfluous, since everything is obvious: the visitor enters to choose a product and forms the request. Also on such sites there is an opportunity to read reviews of other users, leave a comment, compare similar goods, etc.

Online service

Any Internet resources that allow their users to solve certain tasks on the Internet using a standard browser. It is impossible to talk about their purpose, since these can be games, and automated systems for the promotion of sites, and video hosting, systems for virtual money, etc. Quite often, the online service is the implementation of the functions of the usual desktop applications by means of web programming, for example, Google Docs – an online office that is analogous to Microsoft Office or OpenOffice.org, but only on the Internet. Over time, these services will appear more and more.

Search engine

Information resources providing the ability to search for documents on the Internet, such as google.com, bing.com and etc.

Social networks (social networking service)

A resource for communication and organization of people from different communities in the virtual space. Today, social networks are not only complex software systems with databases, but rather a projection of society with all its aspects into the digital space.
